mailing list. If possible, leave the subject lines blank.

Every
email message
sent to the
list address (BICHONFRISE-L@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM)
is relayed to all the members on the list. It is not
necessary that you have full Internet access to
participate; if you can send and receive email via the Internet, you can be a member
of the "Bichon Frise Breed Discussion List".
If you want to do something that is not noted above, use the HELP command in your mail message. When you send a command message to the LISTSERV, do NOT include your signature at the end of the message.
How To SubscribeSend an email to LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM with the following single line in the body of the message (leave the subject line blank):
SUBSCRIBE BICHONFRISE-L your name
OR
subscribe bichonfrise-l your name
Please include your real first and last name. You can leave the subject line blank, or, if your email service requires a subject line (such as AOL), just type anything you want. Please do NOT include a signature. If your application for membership is accepted, you will receive an email confirmation that your membership has been processed. You will have 48 hours to confirm acceptance. You are required to respond to the confirmation. Using your reply function, type "OK" (do not include the quotes) in the body of the message (do not include a signature) for your membership to take effect. You will start receiving messages by the following day.
Also, please note that it's "BICHONFRISE-L" (the letter "L" as in "LOVE thy Bichon") and not "BICHONFRISE-1" (the number one).
It is customary, but not required, that all new subscribers "introduce" themselves to the group. Once you feel comfortable using the email list, please feel free to send out a note telling us about yourself and your interest in the Bichon. It would be helpful to the other list subscribers to include your Bichon(s) name(s), age(s), and titles (if any). If you have any other pets in your household, please mention these in your introduction.
How To UnsubscribeIf you must leave the list or wish to stop receiving messages altogether, send your message to LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM with the following single line in the body (leave the subject line blank):

How To Send Messages to the
ListThe email address BICHONFRISE-L@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM is called the "list address". To send your message, just email it to BICHONFRISE-L@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM and the LISTSERV will make copies and distribute your message to the entire Bichon list. This is called "sending a message to the list". Be sure to include a descriptive subject line so that other subscribers will know whether it is a new subject or a continuing one. Please include your return email address in the body of your message to facilitate private replies. (Note: do NOT send group messages to the LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM and do NOT send group messages to the list owners.)
Please do NOT send any command to the "list address". They will not be processed. All commands MUST be sent to LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM that is the "LISTSERV address". It is very important to understand the difference between the two, but fortunately it is not complicated. The "LISTSERV address" in a sense acts like a FAX number, and the "list address" acts like a normal phone line. If you make a FAX call to someone's regular phone number by mistake, it will be an unpleasant experience for them, but you will probably be excused the first time. If you do it regularly, however, they will probably become upset and send you a nasty complaint. It is the same with mailing lists, with the difference that you are, in effect, "calling" hundreds of people at the same time. So a lot more people become annoyed if you use the "wrong number" and may tell you so.
How To See/Not See Your Posted
MessagesYou can also tell LISTSERV how you want it to confirm the receipt of messages you send to the list. BICHONFRISE-L is set to a default of "Repro", which means that LISTSERV will send you a copy of your own messages. This way, you can see that the message was distributed and did not get damaged on the way.
After a while you may find that this is annoying. This is especially true if your mail program does not tell you that the message is from you when it informs you that new mail has arrived from BICHONFRISE-L. To change this, send an email to LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM with the following single line in the body (leave the subject line blank):
SET BICHONFRISE-L ACK NOREPRO
LISTSERV will email you a short acknowledgment instead, that looks different in your mailbox directory instead of sending you a copy of your own message. With most mail programs you will know right away that this is an acknowledgment you can read later.
Finally, you can turn off acknowledgments completely, though your list owner does NOT recommend this. However, if you decide to do this anyway, send an email to LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM with the following single line in the body (leave the subject line blank):
SET BICHONFRISE-L NOACK NOREPRO

How To Duplicate Key Elements
in the HeaderSome subscribers use mail programs that only show BICHONFRISE-L as the sender of any message to the List. Since people are notorious about not signing their names to their messages, this can cause a lot of confusion in trying to decide who is saying what, and can make it impossible to send email privately. Send an email to LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM with the following single line in the body (leave the subject line blank):
SET BICHONFRISE-L DUALHDR
LISTSERV will duplicate key elements of the original message within the message itself so it is apparent who sent the message.
How To Change Your Delivery
FormatTo receive your messages in digest format (digest form means you will receive all the daily messages from the List grouped together into a single email, as opposed to receiving each message individually), send an email to LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM with the following single line in the body (leave the subject line blank):
SET BICHONFRISE-L DIGESTS
The current default of the List is digest form. Digest recipients should be particularly careful in replying to list messages to AVOID resending the entire digest. Make sure you change the subject line to the appropriate subject description.
To receive the messages individually, send an email to LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM with the following single line in the body (leave the subject line blank):
SET BICHONFRISE-L NODIGESTS

How To Suspend List Messages
TemporarilyIf you are going on vacation or will otherwise be unable to receive messages for an extended period, please temporarily postpone your receipt of BICHONFRISE-L posts to prevent your mailbox from filling up. To temporarily suspend list delivery, send an email to LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM with the following single line in the body (leave the subject blank):
SET BICHONFRISE-L NOMAIL
You will NOT be able to use this option indefinitely. You will be unsubscribed if this option is left on for 2 weeks or more. Please unsubscribe if you no longer wish to receive BICHONFRISE-L email. However, if you are removed from the list, you may always reapply when you are ready. To reapply follow the same procedure as a new subscriber.
To start receiving your messages again, send an email to LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM with the following single line in the body (leave the subject blank):
SET BICHONFRISE-L MAIL
Resumes your temporarily suspended mail, whether individual or digests.
How To Get More HelpSend an email to BichonFrise-L-REQUEST@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM with your question or problem. The List Owner (a human) will answer your request for assistance.
It is not necessary to first subscribe to the Bichon Frise Mailing List to request and receive help.
Contributions sent to this list are automatically archived. You can get a list of the available archive files by sending an "INDEX BICHONFRISE-L" command to LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM. You can then order these files with a "GET BICHONFRISE-L LOGxxxx" command, or using LISTSERV's database search facilities. Send an "INFO DATABASE" command for more information on the latter.
